As Unschoolers our children choose what and when they want to learn something. We never force learning because we have found that our children learn better, and are happier when they get to decide what it is they want to learn about. Their love of learning blossomed when we got out of their way and let them take the lead in their education.

This has been quite a week for our 8 year old son, Gabriel. This was the second week of his online Paleobiology Course through Coursera. This is a 12 week college course from the University of Alberta that our son learned about online and was determined to take. He is loving this course. He has already learned all about dinosaur anatomy including vertebrae, fenestras in the skulls, arm bones, and leg bones. Also, the differences in Saurischian Dinosaurs and Ornithischian Dinosaurs and the fossilization process. It's been very exciting around here!
This week our son decided he wanted to recreate the Hogwarts school of Witchcraft and Wizardry from Harry Potter in Minecraft. We looked up a tutorial on You Tube and away he went! He has finished the great hall, the court yard, Gryffindor tower, and several other towers. I believe this stems from the "Harry Potter Day" we had last week, because now he also says he wants to learn cursive writing....but, he needs a quill and ink to do so. So, I took him to pick out his own quill and ink this week and he has started practicing his letters in cursive. This kid has never been a fan of writing but suddenly loves it! It must be the quill and ink, HA!
Gabriel finished up "The Lost World" by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and began "Treasure Island" by Robert Louis Stevenson. I love his taste in literature!
Finally, we have been watching Dr. Who in the evenings. We are currently on the 11th Doctor. For those of you who have never met our son....just imagine a 4 foot, 8 year old, 11th Doctor. I'm serious. My husband and I have commented several times on how they act so similar. Now we know that Dr. Who is a fictional character, but the similarities are uncanny. It was fitting then, when Gabriel decided he needed to dress like the 11th Doctor! We just need to find him an old jacket to finish his look. Halloween costume, done!
It has been a fun and exciting week around here. I can't wait to see what next week holds!
