Hiking Margarette Falls

Last week my husband and I took our children up to the beautiful state of Tennessee. We were visiting my sister and brother-in-law on their farm for eight days. There were so many memorable adventures that I have made them into separate posts. You can see our first day on the farm here.

On our second day of vacation Uncle Joe took us hiking up to Margarette Falls. My sister wasn't up to the hike so she stayed at the farm with Jade.  Margarette Falls is one of 177 trails in the Cherokee National Forest. I adore being in the forest. It always makes me feel so rejuvenated and grounded. This trail is 3.5 miles and follows the stream up to the actual falls. It is filled with beautiful wildflowers and mushrooms. We also noticed some extremely large millipedes near the water. Gabriel loved getting a closer look!

Hiking Up to the Falls

The bridge was about half way into the trail and gave us an awesome view of the stream. Up until this point the trail was easy. But directly after the bridge the trail turned into large rocks that we had to hop along while keeping our balance. It was a bit questionable at first but then the trail returned to the packed dirt and smaller rocks it had been before. Crossing those wobbly rocks was worth it. The butterflies were precious and the views were breathtaking.

The Lower Falls

The lower falls were wonderful! I couldn't imagine better. The lush green of the forest and the call of the birds was soothing. We even found wild blackberries along the trail! Then we had to cross the stream by hopping across more wobbly rocks. Gabriel moved like a ninja! I was less than graceful.

Hiking Margarette Falls

Finally, after an hour and a half of hiking, we reached Margarette Falls. These falls are roughly 40 foot in height. All I could say was, "WOW!" I was impressed. We settled down on large rocks to relax for a bit. Gabriel and Uncle Joe took their shoes off and stepped into the icy pool to cool off. Gabriel found the perfect rock from the stream to take home as a souvenir and then we made the hour and a half trek back down the mountain. If you are ever in the area, I highly recommend hiking up to Margarette Falls. You won't be dissapointed!
