In years past our kids haven't really bothered much with Advents or the countdowns to Christmas. I've tried several but they never gathered much steam as the month of December counted down. This year, however, is totally different. Since Halloween night there has been a ceaseless question. This question pops up several times per day. I've been scratching my head wondering why the change this year. Perhaps it's because of the age of our children or perhaps it's because of the Christmas Lists they have. Either way, the question I have been hearing everyday is, "How many more days till Christmas?"

I thought that, with the children being totally into the countdown to Christmas, this would be a great year to try the A-Book-A-Day Advent Calendar. Now, I know what you're thinking...books can get expensive! You are absolutely right! So, instead of giving each child their own stack of books to countdown with, I went with 1 stack of books. Also, I went shopping at places like Dollar Tree, Goodwill, and the $1 section of Target. Goodwill was by far the best source for us. I scored 12 paperbacks for 77 cents a piece and 4 hardbacks for $1 each.
I was happy to find several classics such as Stuart Little, The Wind in the Willows, and A Wrinkle in Time. I was delighted to find the second book in the How to Train Your Dragon series as well as the third book in the Spiderwick Chronicles! I found a whole collection by C. W. Anderson about Billy and his pony Blaze. There is even a 'Twas The Night Before Christmas (to be opened on Christmas Eve). All in all I believe the children will really enjoy the books I picked up. I know that several of the books will be far to long to finish in a single day, but I don't think our son will mind.
I wrapped the books in brown paper. It reminds me of the presents in the Little House on the Prairie books. Laura's presents, if wrapped, were always in brown paper. I used some left over red yarn to finish off each package and then numbered them. I just love the way they turned out. I can't wait to start reading our way to Christmas!
P.S. I have a few more books to pick up and add to our A-Book-A-Day. Luckily I have a full week before our countdown begins. So, plenty of time to shop for the remaining books.
